Top 5 Most Common TV Problems and Solutions [Technician Field Report 2026]

The Standstill in the Living Room

After working hard for eight hours at your office, you return home and decide to unwind by switching on the TV, which has been sitting idle in your living room all day. Unfortunately, this is easier said than done. When you turn the wall socket on, press the red button of your remote control, there is no reaction. Or you may see the audio working well, your set-top box is showing signal strength and everything is fine, except that the screen remains totally dark.

You become frustrated and confused, checking the plug, switching the HDMI ports, tapping the back plastic cover of your TV and trying to power-cycle your TV at least three times. Without results. You reach out for your phone and start looking online, just to find contradicting pieces of advice. Forums claim that modern flat-screen TVs are not meant to be repaired and thrown away.

What happens out in the real world is simple – today’s modern 4K, LED and Smart TVs are modular electronic machines consisting of independent electrical circuits. They almost never break down for no apparent reason. A wrongly identified fault may result in a thousand rupees wasted in changing the wrong panel, or even the disposal of your TV if all it needed was a tiny circuit change.

Having been an on-the-ground technician making service calls every day, I present to you this breakdown of the five most common TV hardware faults, their engineering reasons and the actual solutions to these problems that we apply straight away on the spot.

On-the-Ground Experience: The Hinjewadi Phase 1 Story

Here is one of my on-site service calls, which illustrates what a trick these failures can play on you.

A software engineer from an apartment society contacted SK TV Repair in regards to a malfunctioning 55-inch Sony Bravia 4K LED TV bought near the end of 2021. While watching a live cricket game on the TV, it showed an odd behavior – a flashing once, complete blackout followed by blinking of the front panel in a 6-times red blink code.

He already contacted an authorized service representative earlier that day. After inspection of the external condition and detection of the blink code, the technician announced, “It’s an internal gate leak in your liquid crystal display cell. The whole assembly needs replacement, which will cost you ₹24,000 plus labor.”

The customer was ready to give up and pay for the entire assembly at the cost of ₹24,000 plus a brand-new TV worth ₹65,000. One of his colleagues at the office advised him to give me a try.

I came to his residence, laid my antistatic protective sheet on his drawing room floor, dismounted the TV, and opened the chassis cover.

On the Sony TVs, a 6 Blink error code directly indicates a backlight inverter or panel power failure communication problem. It doesn’t always signify the glass failure. I detached the main motherboard from the power circuit, bridged the standby pin to power-on pin with the help of my bench resistor, and measured the LED driver rail.

There was an instant rise in the voltage to 125V and then there was a cut-off down to 0V. This revealed that the driver circuit had tripped due to a short that was caused within the lighting circuit.

I unscrewed the front bezel and took off the LCD glass using the suction cups and revealed the backlight grid. Out of 48 high output LEDs, two were short-circuited with the crack on their acrylic optical lens due to thermal stress. The LCD glass panel was in excellent condition.

I got the new array of LED strips made on aluminum substrate which helps in better heat dissipation along with balancing of the feedback loop of the driver circuit. After reassembly of the set, on testing it was found that there wasn’t a single problem and the Sony Bravia turned ON directly to 4K brightness. The client saved a lot of money on this repair, around ₹4,200 instead of ₹60,000 on buying a new set.

5 Most Common TV Problems and Their Field Solutions

Modern TVs have a universal build-up: the Power Supply Unit (PSU), the Main Logic Motherboard, the Timing Controller (T-Con) board, the LED Backlight array, and the Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) Cell. In case one of these modules becomes defective, it will lead to definite symptomps.

                    TV HARDWARE ARCHITECTURE BREAKDOWN
+-----------------------------------------------------------------------+
1. Power Supply Board : Takes 230V AC; delivers clean 12V/24V DC
2. Main Motherboard : Handles HDMI inputs, Wi-Fi, audio, & decoding
3. T-Con Board : Translates video frames into pixel row data
4. Backlight Array : High-output LED strips illuminating the glass
5. LCD Glass Panel : Millions of RGB sub-pixels creating the image

Problem 1: No Screen, but the TV Sounds Well

The Symptom:

You switch the TV on, and the indicator light confirms that the TV is on. By pressing volume or input buttons on the remote control, you hear all operating sounds. While switching channels either via cable TV or via your internet streaming services, you can clearly hear dialogues and background sound from the internal speakers. But the picture stays pitch black.

Engineering Failure Explanation:

In more than 90% of all failures, this problem is related to an open circuit in the LED Backlight Array. All modern LED TVs operate using series of LED diodes. Since they are wired up in series, when one diode fails and disconnects the entire chain stops to work just like the burnt-out Christmas tree bulb does. Power supply recognizes the problem and turns off the LED driver rail in order to protect the components from damage, turning the screen off while keeping the other TV parts active.

Technical Solution Description:

Performing Flashlight test: In a dark room, shine the powerful light from your smartphone’s flashlight straight onto the display glass, being no farther than two inches away from it. If you are able to discern faint images or menu text drawing in the background of the light, then the LCD display and motherboard are fine.

Television Chassis Disassembly: The TV needs to be put flat onto anti-static surface, frame to be unclipped and fragile liquid crystal glass needs to be removed with vacuum suction cups.

Full Strip Replacement: It is important not to replace the faulty diode alone; the rest of the old diodes will burn soon enough. All strips are replaced with new ones, which have an aluminum core of LED arrays.

Problem 2: Television Does Not Work (Dead Standby LED or Clicking Noise)

The Problem:

The television is not responding at all. The standby LED on the panel is not lighting up at all, although electricity flows through the wall socket. In the other scenario, the LED is lit up, but upon pressing the power button, a clicking noise (click-clack) can be heard from inside the device, but the screen does not work at all.

The Engineering Explanation:

This problem occurs due to problems with the Power Supply Unit (PSU). The switched mode power supply units (SMPS) of televisions are very prone to power surges, lightning surges or overheating. The electrolytic capacitors become bulged or electrolytic liquid starts leaking, causing the inability of the capacitor to provide a steady DC voltage to the motherboard. The relay clicks due to the safety circuit detecting an unstable voltage rail.

+-----------------------------------------------------------------------+
                   POWER SUPPLY FAILURE SYMPTOMS
+-----------------------------------------------------------------------+
Swollen / Leaking Capacitors : Boot-up delays; relay ticking sound
Blown Bridge Rectifier : MCB of entire room trips
Shorted Primary MOSFET : No picture; no standby indicator LED
Burned Standby IC : High voltage grid surge damage
+-----------------------------------------------------------------------+

Technical Fix

Cold Resistance Tests: Using a digital multimeter, we perform cold resistance tests on the ceramic fuse, bridge rectifier, and MOSFETs to detect any ground shorts.

Individual Component Soldering: Rather than bill clients for a new power supply board, we desolder defective electrolytic capacitors, bridge rectifiers, and PWM ICs and solder in high-temp, low-ESR industrial replacement parts.

Bench Voltage Tests: After desoldering these bad parts, we bench-test the voltages from the 3.3V standby rail, 12V main rail, and 24V backlight rail before replacing the mainboard.

Problem 3: Vertical or Horizontal Colored Lines Over the Entire Screen

The Problem:

Thin and hair-like vertical lines extending from top to bottom; solid vertical lines colored in large bars; or horizontal lines vibrating and covering parts of the screen. There are instances where these lines only show during the warm-up period after turning the TV on and then dissipating slowly.

The Engineering Explanation:

The presence of such problem points to a break in data flow between the Timing Controller Board and the micro-fine Chip-On-Film (COF) drivers attached along the edges of the LCD glass substrate.

Vertical Lines: Usually brought about by oxidized ribbon cables; faulty T-Con processor; or bonding failure on the source COF tabs.

Horizontal Lines: Usually due to gate-line micro-shorts in the internal conducting layers of the glass panel or faulty gate COF drivers along the sides of the screen.

Technical Fix:

Ribbon Service and LVDS Inspection: We unplug the flexible flat cables (FFC) connecting the T-Con board with the panels, clean the gold contact pins with isopropyl solvent, and reseat them to fix impedance mismatches.

T-Con Voltage Rails: We verify critical voltage rails on the T-Con board – VGH (Gate High, which is 25V-30V), VGL (Gate Low, -5V to -8V), and VCOM (Common Voltage). The absence of the rail indicates a bad buck regulator on the T-Con board.

Clock Line Gate Isolation: In case the horizontal lines result from micro-short in the glass margins of the panel, we isolate those particular clock lines (CKV1, CKV2, CKVB) using tape masking and/or trace isolation. This will separate the shorted sub-pixels and make the other side of the display drive the whole screen without any horizontal lines or double frames.

Problem 4: Infinite Loop, Logo Stuck and System Freezes

The Symptom:

Upon turning on the television, the brand logo comes on, sticks for several seconds, then vanishes from view while the TV turns off and then powers itself back on in a repetitive loop. In some instances, the TV’s smart interface boots up but fails to respond to any input from the remote control and physical buttons.

Engineering Problem:

This problem is caused by a malfunction of the Main Motherboard, mainly the onboard storage firmware/processor.

Corruption of the eMMC Flash Storage: Smart TVs constantly write logs and application caches to an onboard memory chip (eMMC). In three to five years of operation, the memory blocks degrade and cause corruption of the operating system’s boot partition.

Thermal Overclocking: Modern multi-core processors produce a lot of heat. In years of operation, the thermal paste holding the processor against its passive heatsink dries into chalk. The processor hits thermal throttling after a couple of seconds after the start-up and shuts down.

+-----------------------------------------------------------------------+
                  SMART TV MAINBOARD FAULT PATH
+-----------------------------------------------------------------------+
eMMC Storage Corruption --> Bootloader Corruption --> Bootloop
Dried Factory Thermal Paste --> Thermal Shutdown --> Power Loss
Voltage Regulation Failure --> Insufficient Voltage --> UI Freezing
+-----------------------------------------------------------------------+

Technical Fix:

UART Terminal Debugging: We use a USB-to-UART converter cable to connect directly to the mainboard pins and access the boot logs using a PC terminal application to determine the exact fault type (either eMMC read error or kernel panic).

Firmware Recovery / eMMC Repair: In case of corrupted firmware on healthy eMMC storage, we recover a clean factory-signed version of firmware either through direct USB flashing or offline programmers. In case of faulty memory cells, we replace the eMMC with a new one programmed before soldering.

Thermal System Repair: We unsolder the heatsink from the processor and apply fresh industrial-grade thermal paste.

Problem 5: Dull Colors, Poor Contrast, or a Discoloration with an Icy Blue/Violet Color Tone

The Symptom:

There is an overall icy blue or dark violet discoloration of the TV picture that can’t be fixed using the TV picture adjustment menus. In other cases, the picture may become dull, faces would have a ghostly look, or white features would get a grayish look.

The Technical Cause:

Such a problem happens because of the damage to the Phosphor Layer of the backlight LED diodes. The commercial white LEDs are the blue gallium-nitride (GaN) devices coated with a special yellow phosphor. After the light is emitted by the yellow layer, the light becomes white.

After many thousands of hours of usage at high temperatures, inexpensive or old phosphor layers deteriorate and flake off the diodes. Without the phosphor layer, raw blue and ultraviolet light floods the whole display.

Technical Solution:

No amount of color balance adjustment, contrast adjustment, or resetting of factory settings will correct this problem; the chemical coating within the hardware has failed.

The only solution to this problem is a total replacement of the internal LED strips that have high stability phosphor coatings. Once this has been done, the natural color balance and contrast are restored.

The simple rule to follow is: The 40% Rule. Repair becomes a rational financial option if professional service for replacing components is less than 40% of the cost of buying a new one that is similar in performance. Also, if there are no cracks caused by physical impact on the front glass display screen.

Preventive Actions for Clients to Take to Avoid Premature Failure

The following minor adjustments will help avoid additional stresses on internal components:

Reduce Backlight Level: By default, televisions leave the factory in the setting of “Vivid” or “Store Demo” pictures and with backlight set at 100%. Reducing its value to 70% or 75% can lower temperature in the diodes up to 15-20°C, doubling their operational life.

Adequate Airflow: Mount the flat screen at a distance of three to four inches from each side in order to provide adequate airflow from the back cooling exhaust holes. Do not install them flush against closed walls made of wood.

Avoid Applying Cleaner to the Screen: Never spray cleaners directly to the surface, as this causes the liquid to flow down under the bottom bezel and make direct contact with the COF ribbons, which lead to permanent damage of the drivers and the vertical lines.

Adequate Spike Guard Is Essential: Surge voltage from severe weather conditions and grid switching affects the primary power supply capacitors. A basic spike guard prevents these electrical spikes from reaching the internal bridge rectifier of the television.

Transparent Doorstep TV Service in Pune & PCMC

Moving a pricey 50-inch, 55-inch or 65-inch display through tight stairways and bringing it to another place is risky. Just a small flex of the frame when driving on a bad road is enough to break the internal glass cell of the TV.
